Basic Life Support (BLS)
BLS is the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest. The AHA’s BLS Course has been updated to reflect new science in the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. This video-based, instructor-led course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both in-facility and prehospital settings.
Who should take this course?
The AHA’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel (including educators and paraprofessionals) who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of settings. New science and education from the 2020 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC.
What does this course teach?
- High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
- The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
- Important early use of an AED
- Effective ventilations using a barrier device
- Importance of teams in multirescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
- Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants
Basic Life Support (BLS) Course Options
Classroom BLS
Instructor-led, hands-on class format reinforces skills proficiency
The BLS Instructor-led course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both prehospital and in-facility environments, with a focus on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics.
Full BLS Provider Course takes approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes to complete, including skills practice and skills testing
- Emphasis on high-quality CPR, improvement of chest compression fraction, and high-performing team dynamics.
- Video-based course with real world scenarios that teaches basic life support skills for application in both in-facility and pre-hospital settings.
Blended Learning HeartCode® BLS
Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on skills session.
HeartCode BLS Online is the online portion of BLS blended learning that will prepare students for hands-on practice and testing of BLS skills.
The online portion of HeartCode BLS can be completed in approximately 1 to 2 hours.
Time to complete the hands-on skills session varies from 60 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the experience of the student.
- The learner has a choice of completing a pre-hospital or in-hospital contextualized track.
- The course content is presented in the form of self-directed learning content, probes and Cognitive Assessment Activities. It uses a personalized adaptive algorithm that sets learners on the most efficient path to BLS mastery.
Upon completion of all course requirements, participants receive a BLS Provider Course Completion Card which is valid for two years.
Both courses (Classroom BLS & Blended Learning HeartCode® BLS) receive the same completion card.
