Richard

I moved to Denver on April 5, 2010 from a small town (of 70,000 people) in Southeast Texas. I frequently use colloquialisms such as ‘YES MA’AM’, ‘NO SIR’, ‘HONEY’, and ‘Y’ALL’ as there were strict expectations about politeness and manners growing up. While I don’t drink coffee, but thrive on gallons and gallons of iced tea. I love live theatre, travel, science-based museums, number and word puzzles, boardgames, card games, escape rooms, and I watch absolutely too much television and cinema.

I did cub scouts and boy scouts from kindergarten until I turned 18… I’m even an Eagle Scout. I learned a lot in scouting, but there are a lot of issues with scouting as well so I haven’t looked back as something I wanted to do as an adult. In high school I was in band (trumpet) and then later I was in drama, I did a lot of work in my hometown’s community theatre productions and summer programs.

I’ve always loved being in leadership positions and opportunities to move projects and programs forward through my support. When I was 18 I started a non-profit in my hometown to give queer folks the opportunity to meet and engage the community. It started with monthly meetings and then ended up with parades and PRIDE events. I volunteered a few years when I first moved here, but have since focused on my personal and professional life.

I’ve had a lot of jobs in my life (waiter, bowling alley snack bar cook, car salesman, call center agent among other roles up to corporate HR coordinator, and now nurse), but was working in the outsourcing (call centers) for close to 7 years when I moved to Denver. The call center work was also the reason I got to go to the Philippines and launch a new site there. It was amazing and I’d love to go back. When that company had a big change in leadership I followed my then boss from that company to another place and did that for a couple years as well. It was also call center based, but for a dialysis company headquartered out of Denver.

I’m a registered nurse in Colorado, working as a Case Manager supporting patients and their families admitted to a large pediatric hospital system here in the Denver Metro Area. I previously worked in public education as a Nationally Certified School Nurse working to ensure health was not a barrier to students accessing their education. I am a current member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), Colorado Nurses Association (CNA), and American Case Management Association (ACMA).

In addition to all of that, I earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, a Colorado Public Radio (CPR) Evergreen Member, an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor, a certified QPR instructor, a Notary Public for the State of Colorado, a cardmaker, a soapmaker, and love learning new things and trying out new hobbies, if only for a minute.
